Queen Anne walnut pier mirror c.1710

Circa 1710
A fine and rare Queen Anne period walnut and gesso framed pier mirror in delightfully original condition including the murcurial glass and back boards.
This fine mirror is made of two pieces of glass , as is typical, the top one being shaped according to the frame. The frame has a gilded sight edge enclosed in a convex moulding, cross-grain-veneed in beautifully patinated walnut.
Mirrors of this period with glass plates over a certain size were always made in two parts, as early glass-making techniques which involved floating moulten glass on a flat bed, would only allow for smaller sheets.
