Marble
A fine marble statue believed to be of Robert Burns (1759- 1796), the Scottish poet. Signed 'RHIND'
This statue is very similar in style to the Robert Burns memorial in Barre, Vermont which was conceived by John Massey Rhind (1860 - 1936), son of John Rhind (1836 - 1889). This memorial was erected as an observance of the centenary of Burn's death in 1896
Burns is portrayed in each, in a casual, more natural pose, wearing shirt-sleeves and just returning from a days labour in the field. The present statue is possibly a design piece or maquette for the Vermont memorial, made circa 1896
