Small Georgian mahogany bureau bookcase

Circa 1765
A very fine and rare Georgian mahogany bureau bookcase of very narrow proportions and bearing an old label stating that it was exhibited at The Grsvenor House Antiques Fair in 1953. The open fretwork, swan-neck pediment with gilded scroll terminals above a stepped moulded cornoce and a serpentine shaped, gilded-edge ,mirrorrored door which encloses adjustable bookshelves. Below the door there are two cnadlestick-slides to allow light reflected from the mirror to light the room and the work surface below. The bureau base has a mitred-edge flap which encloses a fitted interior with drawers, pigeon holes and small compartments. This sits above four long drawers all fitted with the original rococco fire-gilded handles which are raised on ogee shaped bracket feet.
A very fine and original example with illustrious history. Sometimes called a "Ladies Cabinet" these are highly sort after, classic pieces of traditional English, Georgian furniture.
